This class will provide an in-depth look at census records in the United States. The class will be a combined lecture and workshop, with hands-on exercises in the use of census records. Included will be:
  • Federal population schedules
  • Federal non-population schedules: slave, mortality, agricultural, DDD, veterans, Indian, manufacturing, merchant seaman, social statistics
  • Missing Federal schedules
  • State census records
  • Reliabilty of census records
  • Getting the most out of census records: how to use pre-1850 records, interpreting mysterious codes

Vital records (birth, marriage, death) provide important information on the connections and major events of our ancestors lives. But, vital records go far beyond the basic certificates that we often consider. This class will be a combined lecture and workshop, with hands-on exercises in the use of vital records. This class will only be covering civil vital records - use of church records, newspapers, etc. will be covered in other classes. Included will be:
  • Availabilty of birth, marriage, and death records: requirements for recording
  • Privacy issues in obtaining records
  • Birth records: original, delayed
  • Marriage records: applications, licenses, returns
  • Death records: original, coroner's inquests, removal records
  • Reliability of vital records

Find-A-Grave can be an invaluable tool for providing you with information and clues on your ancestors and their extended family. Think you already know Find-A-Grave? Perhaps not as well as you might believe. This class will cover all you need to know about Find-A-Grave from basic to advanced functions as well as how you can use Find-A-Grave to help others in their research.
Covered in the class will be:
  • Getting Started: Community rules, FAQ, support, other links, tutorials, how it works
  • Basics: Searching memorials, creating an account, editing and linking memorials, messaging vs email
  • Intermediate: Creating memorials, adding photos, requesting photos
  • Advanced: Transferring memorials, merging memorials, cenotaphs, formatting entries, saving to Ancestry or FamilySearch
  • Other: Leaving flowers, sponsoring a memorial, setting up favorite and virtual cemeteries, paying it forward

These records can help us place our ancestors in time and place, as well as tell us much about their economic status. This class will be a combined lecture and workshop on land and property records. Included will be:

  • Indexes to deeds
  • Typical deed information and language
  • Land descriptions and how to plot them
  • Tax lists and what they tell us
  • Homesteads
  • Maps
